Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey play an undercover cop and his target-turned-love-interest in the first trailer for horny cruising drama Plainclothes.

Starring Hunger Games prequel lead Tom Blyth as undercover (and closeted) cop Lucas, and Years and Years star Russell Tovey as Andrew, Plainclothes centres on the cruising culture of New York.

As seen in the trailer, Blyth is recruited as part of a police task force to set up sting operations on gay men looking for sex in public hotspots – but when he finds himself drawn to the older Andrew, (a lot of) things go south for Lucas.

The first full trailer after an initial teaser shows Lucas begin to entrap Andrew, before an intense game of cat and mouse begins, along with a healthy dose of some equally intense sex scenes. We will be sat.

“You can always tell when a man is hiding something,” Lucas’s family says to him as his world begins to unravel.

The film’s official synopsis reads as follows: “What begins as another setup becomes something far more electric and intimate.

“As their secret connection deepens and police pressure to deliver arrests intensifies, Lucas finds himself torn between duty and desire. With time running out and his past closing in, Plainclothes builds toward a New Year’s Eve reckoning where everything he’s buried threatens to erupt.”

Blyth previously told Variety that he “took control” in one of the film’s “intimate” sex scenes with Tovey.

“It was really intimate, really vivid, and [the intimacy coordinator] was incredible. It felt very organic. It felt like we rehearsed it in a way where I think Russell and I both were made to feel confident and comfortable enough that we could lead it.

“I think it works best when the actors feel emboldened to be able to take control of the choreography and make it feel organic.”

Plainclothes debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and snatched the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast – which includes Amy Forsyth, Christian Cooke, Maria Dizzia, and Gabe Fazio.

Critics have called Blyth “stellar” and Tovey “unfiltered and raw” in the Magnolia Pictures film, which has a 19 September release date in cinemas.
