The author of Red, White & Royal Blue has said “pencils are down” for the proposed sequel, leaving fans to work out if that’s good news or bad.

Casey McQuiston, who is co-writing the script with Matthew López, provided the update during an interview on Friday (15 August). “I think it’s safe to say our pencils are down for now,” the non-binary author said. “We’ll see what comes next. I’m not at liberty to say more than that.”

The novel and film follow British prince Henry, and Alex, the son of the US president, who go from rivals to secret lovers. The 2023 screen adaptation, directed by López was a huge success, prompting calls for a sequel.

News of a second film was announced last year, despite there being no book on which to base it. Stars Nicholas Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Uma Thurman were all set to return. However, McQuiston’s latest statement has left some fans fearing for the project’s future.

“I don’t know how anyone reads this as positive, they didn’t say the script is done,” one fan said. “To me, it means postponed.”

Another agreed, writing: “That’s exactly how I took it. I’m starting to worry we will never get it.”

More-optimistic fans offered different interpretations, declaring: “Pencils down means writing is done…” and “OK… sounds promising… vague but positive.”

McQuiston has previously hinted what to expect from a second film, saying: “The sequel is a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie, and you have to move forward as two adults in a serious adult partnership, with pressures and expectations and dreams that might be coming into conflict with each other, and things that might be pulling them in different directions.”

In September, producer Greg Berlanti revealed that McQuiston and López were close to finishing the script. However, there has been news about the start of production.
