Viewers of The Summer I Turned Pretty have been reminded of how to behave online after growing backlash against one of the lead characters and the actor who plays him.

Gavin Casalegno plays Jeremiah Fisher in the series based on the novels of the same name by Jenny Han. The series follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung) and the love triangle between her and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Casalegno) Fisher. However, unlike in the books, Jeremiah is bisexual in the series.

Comments online indicate fans want Belly to end up with Conrad, not Jeremiah. However, fans seem to be having a hard time separating the actor from the character.

The hate has reached such a level that Prime Video felt it necessary to reissue a warning it put out prior to the beginning of season three. “Cousins is our safe place,” it wrote referencing the location of the series. “Everything good, everything magical. Let’s keep the conversation kind this summer.”

Another post shared the show’s community guidelines, which reads: “We have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying and hate speech.”

The post also warned that any hate speech, bullying, targeting of the cast and crew, and the harassing or doxxing of other community members would see users banned.

And in a third post captioned “The Summer We Started Acting Normal Online,” it added, “The show isn’t real but the people playing the characters are.”

Speaking to The New York Times about the hate recently, Casalegno said, “I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate. The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it’s important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me.”

The 25-year-old actor also said that “it’s pretty comical” when fans approach him to express their hate for Jeremiah.

As ever with love triangles, fictional or not, people have a habit of choosing a side. We’ve seen it with The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games, and probably even Harry Potter at some point! People just need to chill. As Tung told Teen Vogue recently: “It’s not that serious.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is available on Prime Video.
