Wake up, “Wake Up” stans: underrated pop goddess Hilary Duff has just teased a potential return to pop music.

Writing on Instagram on 27 August, the former Lizzie McGuire actress and “Sparks” singer marked the 22-year anniversary of her debut pop record Metamorphosis, which dropped way back in 2003.

The record rocketed to number one on the US Billboard chart, sold millions of copies worldwide, and became the eight best-selling album of 2003 in America. It also spawned a top ten UK hit in “So Yesterday”.

On Instagram, Duff shared a nostalgic carousel of photos of herself from the Metamorphosis era, complete with all the early 2000s fashion you could ask for (Studded belts! Garish, frilly skirts! Exposed midriffs!).

“Clearly I had to go digging around the internet for pictures from this time as I’m not sure camera phones even existed. Sadly all my hairstyles ARE very documented,” she jested.

“I do know this marker of time was a huge change in my being. I was embarking on something I had no idea would make such an impact on peoples lives, and mine.

“As much as I look back and think this album doesn’t hold the emotional depth I look for today, I know my 14/15 year old self meant every word. It sure as hell also landed on people at the right moment in time and set me off on a pretty epic adventure.”

She continued: “Yesterday marked the 22nd anniversary of Metamorphosis… Although these are distant memories for me, thank you for showing up the way that you did.”

Then, most importantly, she rounded off her sweet message with a teasing, cryptic promise: “To be continued…”

On Instagram Stories, she shared a text conversation with a friend, in which the pair joked about Duff’s outfits at the time.

“Never been more obsessed with a post,” her friend wrote. “And I’m so excited.”

Pop lovers have taken the coy messages as all-but confirmation that Hilary Duff is working on new music.

“Hilary Duff literally never acknowledges album anniversaries and now she has posted about two of them this year! Music comeback incoming,” one fan guessed.

Back in June, the musician wrote an anniversary post marking the tenth anniversary of her fifth and most recent album, Breathe In. Breathe Out.

“I feel like we need to come together as a society and convince Hilary Duff to make a music comeback,” a second fan added.

“Please do a comeback tour,” begged a third.

PinkNews’ own content and publishing coordinator Tom Hutt-Dixon gasped: “TO BE CONTINUED?!?!?”

In May, Duff’s husband and musician Matthew Koma appeared to tease that his wife was making music again, posting a black and white photo of her in a music studio to mark Mother’s Day.

Following Metamorphosis, Duff released three other albums, and made waves on the charts with singles including “Fly” and “Wake Up”.

In 2015, she released “All About You” and “Sparks”, the latter of which frequently goes viral on social media thanks to pop fans declaring it one of the most underrated singles in recent pop history.
