Pop megastar Ariana Grande has added three MTV Video Music Awards to her already impressive collection, and she thanked “gay people” for helping her do so.

The 32-year-old “Yes, And?” singer picked up MTV VMA Awards in the Best Pop and Best Long Form Video categories, before taking home the most prestigious award at last night’s (7 September) New York ceremony: the Video of the Year award.

All three accolades were won for her 26-minute-long epic “Brighter Days Ahead” music video, which features seven songs from Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead album, released in March this year.

The sci-fi video leads on from Grande’s 2024 music video “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”, which stars Grande and American Horror Story star Evan Peters as exes who erase their memories of each other, in the style of Jim Carrey’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Accepting the VMA Moon Person accolade for Best Pop, the Wicked star took a moment to thank both her therapists, and the LGBTQ+ community.

“Oh my god, this is so kind, thank you so much. I have to start by saying thank you so much to my fans. I’m gonna cry again,” she began her speech.

“I love you with every fiber of my being. Thank you, MTV. Thank you to my dad, who acted in this video for the first time in his life. He’s the best scene partner and dad in the world.”

She also thanked the music video’s director Christian Breslauer, her collaborators, and management, before turning her attention to queer folk.

“Thank you to my therapists and gay people. I love you,” she rounded off.

Ariana Grande has long been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, voicing her support for trans people in January following Donald Trump’s inauguration, and signing an open letter in June urging the Trump administration not to cut funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for LGBTQ+ people.

She is also an avid fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race and has appeared as a guest judge three times.

Accepting her accolade for Video of the Year, Grande thanked her fans once again, declaring that she will love them “for [her] whole life”.

“Thank you for growing with me and being so supportive of me as a human being navigating in real time which creative itch needs to be scratched. Next!”

Grande has been nominated for a total of 57 MTV VMAs in her career, and has won 13.

Elsewhere at the 2025 VMAs, singer Sabrina Carpenter used a performance of her latest single “Tears” to promote messages of trans inclusion, with RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants appearing on stage holding banners reading “In trans we trust”, “Protect Trans Rights”, “Dolls, dolls, dolls,” and “If you hate, you’ll never get laid”.
