US congresswoman Sara Jacobs has caused “proud transphobe” Nancy Mace to blow up once again on the subject of trans people by stating that gender-affirming care can include procedures like filler and botox.

On Wednesday (10 September) during a debate on the annual defense authorization bill, California Congresswoman Sara Jacobs,  the youngest member of California’s congressional delegation, responded to an amendment put forward by Nancy Mace to ensure bathrooms and changing facilities are designated by biological sex. This would exclude trans people from the facilities that match their gender identity.

Taking to the floor Jacobs, the Co-Chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force, rebutted Mace’s idea that everyone would be safer if things are done her way.

She added that she thought it was “very interesting” that Mace and other Republicans were “so obsessed” with trans people “when many people in this body have received gender-affirming care.”

Sara Jacobs went on to list different procedures that anyone can access that are considered gender-affirming care. “Filler is gender-affirming care, boob jobs is gender affirming care, botox is gender affirming care,” Jacobs listed.

She added, “Lots of my colleagues have received gender-affirming care. And let me be clear, I think everyone should have access to the gender-affirming care that they need. And I think we should respect everybody in this country.”

After stepping away from the mic the South Carolina Republican could be heard screaming, “Ridiculous. You’re absolutely ridiculous.”

The exchange continued online as Nancy Mace took issue with Jacob’s “commentary about my body”. She then hypocritically added, “I have a good surgeon if you ever want to get your nose done.”

Mace later said there was “no such thing” as a trans child. In response Jacobs, said, “I feel sad for you. Stop lashing out against trans kids and pretending it’s to ‘protect women.’ Hope you get the help you need.”

Mace is known as a prominent anti-trans voice in US politics. Recently, she introduced a Trans Mice Act after President Trump falsely claimed millions had been spent to “make mice transgender”. Last month, she announced she was running for South Carolina governor.

She has previously introduced a resolution to restrict access to single-sex spaces, based on “corresponding biological sex,” in the Capitol building in Washington DC, later admitting it was specifically aimed Democratic colleague Sarah McBride, who became the first trans person in congress after winning the election for Delaware’s at-large district.

Mace has also used slurs when referring to trans people, including about a college student
