Elliot Page is exploring queer wildlife in a brand new documentary, Second Nature: Gender and Sexuality in the Animal World.
A first teaser was released for the upcoming documentary, produced and narrated by the X-Men actor, on Tuesday (14 October).
“There are approximating 8.7 billion living animal species on Earth,” Page narrates over footage of animals in the wild. “For centuries, we have been told that when it comes to gender and sexuality, all these millions of species follow a certain set of rules.
“But what if this narrative fails to capture the full spectrum of life’s diversity?”
Second Nature will premiere at the New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Saturday 18 October, the post’s caption confirmed. It also echoed Page’s narration, stating that the film “disproves many lies we’ve been told about our nature — and thankfully, the truth is so much better!”
It goes on to say, “Exploring 1500+ species who create matriarchies, engage in same-sex sex and parenting, and change sex, @secondnaturedoc proves there’s nothing “inferior” about females and nothing “unnatural” about being queer.”
The film’s website elaborates further on some of the facts of life the film will cover.
“Did you know that clownfish change sex from male to female? (So if Nemo’s mom had died in real life, his dad would have become his mom!) Did you know that albatross, penguins and swans parent in same sex pairs? Or that bonobos, who are just as closely related to us as chimps, are matriarchal and have same-sex sex every day?!,” the site reads.
The film will also feature Dr. Joan Roughgarden, a trans ecologist as well as Dr. Joseph Graves, the first African American to earn a PhD in evolutionary biology. Second Nature also features a cast of female, BIPOC, queer and immigrant scientists.
