Footballers Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have tied the know in “soccer’s royal wedding”.
Australian national team player and Chelsea striker Kerr and Mewis, who announced the arrival of their baby boy, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, in May, took to Instagram to share images of their special day.
The pair got married on New Year’s Eve, and their matrimony has been dubbed “soccer’s royal wedding” on Instagram.
In one post, the pair are seen kissing, with Mewis in a sequinned off-shoulder, white gown and Kerr sporting a black tuxedo. The second photo shows Mewis in a shorter party dress as she sits on her wife’s shoulders during their reception.
The pair were also tagged in a video of snippets from their wedding day, which looked every part as “royal” as it’s being dubbed on social media.
In the comments people congratulated the pair, with one person writing: “This is the strongest act of sportsmanship I’ve ever seen.”
“The gays stay winning,” another comment read.
The couple confirmed their engagement in November 2023 and have previously spoke openly about the importance of their relationship being out and visible in football.
“I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel,” Mewis told Gaffer.
“I love to share my relationship on social media. So I think if we can change the way one or two people feel about themselves, they can look at us and see that we’re happy and we’re trying to be as successful as we can and we’re an out gay couple. I think that that’s so important.”
