Robyn, the queer-favourite pop mathematician behind sad-banger “Dancing On My Own”, has bashed tech billionaire Elon Musk, saying that she has “always hated him”.
Speaking to former Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and comedian Matt Rogers on their Las Culturistas podcast, the Swedish pop deity revealed the precise moment that she decided that she “hated” Tesla founder Musk.
“I have always hated him. Way before it was cool to hate him. There was a time when it wasn’t cool to hate him. People didn’t even think about him that much at least,” she explained.
“You know what happened for me? I started hating him when he put a Tesla in space with a David Bowie song on it. He actually shot a car into space. As if there wasn’t enough s**t floating around.”
In February 2018, Musk launched his electric sports car Tesla Roadster into space as part of the payload on his Falcon Heavy test flight, which was operated by his aerospace company, SpaceX.

The car featured a human mannequin, named “Starman” after Bowie’s 1972 song of the same name, in the driver’s seat. The car played Bowie’s 1969 and 1971 hits “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars?” on a loop on the radio during its ascent.
While Musk was already a controversial figure at the time, having become a billionaire six years prior, the test launch occurred some years before Musk became equally known for espousing right-wing views as for his entrepreneurship.
“This is the thing,” Robyn continued. “I think there should be democracy in space. There should be democracy on Earth, too, yes, which we really maybe don’t even have at the moment.
“But the fact that anyone or any commercial company can decide what to do with natural resources and also do tacky things, like sending a stupid f**king car into space that’s also dangerous for people?” she continued.
“Think about the astronauts that are up there in the International Space Station and they don’t really know what’s going to hit them or whatever. Can we all just have a vote on whoever gets to do anything?”
Robyn joins a long list of entertainment figures to speak out against Musk, who frequently uses his platform on X, formerly Twitter – which he owns – to speak out against the trans community.
Musician Grimes, who shares three young children with her former partner Musk, previously said that she was “endlessly proud” of Musk’s estranged daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, after Musk claimed that the 21-year-old model had been “killed by the woke mind virus”.
White Chicks actor Marlon Wayans has also voiced his support for Wilson and slammed Musk for his treatment of his daughter. Singer Billie Eilish has also spoken out against Musk’s wealth, as he inches closer to becoming the world’s first trillionaire.
Earlier this month, Robyn announced her ninth studio album and her first record in eight years, Sexistential. Speaking of the record’s title, the musician said that it was about “exploring [her] sensual life”.

“It’s such a beautiful kind of sensitive vibration that takes so much work to keep afloat…. it doesn’t even have to be about sex, but it’s feeling sensual and attracted to things that I enjoy, and not letting anything take over that,” she shared.
The record is preceded by three singles, “Dopamine”, released in November, and “Talk To Me” and “Sexistential”, released earlier this month.
Sexistential is due for release on 27 March.
