Elton John has turned a big chunk of his knee into a statement necklace

Sir Elton John has always been forthcoming about his health, and that openness hasn’t stopped him from turning a body part into an accessory. That’s… fashion… we guess?

The 78-year-old “Rocket Man” hitmaker revealed that after a double knee replacement, he used the bone to make a statement necklace.

Elton John has always had an eccentric fashion sense, but proudly showing off his kneecap dangling from his neck is certainly a look.

Speaking in Elton John: Never Too Late about his career, John detailed how this necklace came to be, per the Mirror.

‘It looks a bit like an old artefact from Egypt’

At the premiere, John showed off the gold-framed bone necklace. “My right kneecap. That’s my right patella. My surgeon said I had the worst knees he’s ever operated on.

“That hole was actually in my kneecap. It looks a bit like an old artefact from Egypt.”

“When I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep the kneecaps, which he was rather startled about,” John said.

The singer reached out to jewellery designer Theo Fennell to make this kneecap idea a reality.

Describing the process of making bone into jewellery, Fennell explained he had to dry out the bone for the piece.

“These are timeless pieces that will last for centuries”

“Then they get raw like pumice stone,” Fennell detailed.

“They’re very porous, and so we had to paint them with acetate and then just polish them up.”

John praised Fennell for his handwork: “I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries.”

Fennell said: “I just thought it would be more fun to have a necklace that reflected the thing at the end of it.”

The designer also noted that the necklace is engraved with the Latin phrase that translates to: “I will no longer bow to any man.” Of course, with his kneecap missing, Elton John probably can’t do that anyway.

Though he’s still pushing himself to perform, Elton John has suffered a series of health issues in recent years.

Alongside two knee replacements, he contracted an eye infection last year that has now made him blind in his right eye. Elton John said losing his sight had been “devastating”.

He shared: “Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything.”

However, he remained optimistic about the situation reflecting: “I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one.”
