James Van Der Beek / Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde

The late James Van Der Beek’s final acting role will be in an upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series scheduled to premiere in July 2026.

The Dawson’s Creek and Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 actor died on 11 February, two-and-a-half years after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Titled Elle, the prequel series is set to follow lawyer Elle Woods (played by newcomer Lexi Minetree) as she navigates high school in the 1990s before making her way to Harvard Law School.

Legally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon is serving as an executive producer.

Van Der Beek was cast in the recurring role of Dean Wilson, presumably part of the school’s administration.

June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano and Zac Looker make up the rest of the main cast.

The series, set to air on Amazon’s Prime Video was announced in 2024, with Witherspoon teasing it with an Instagram post which read: “Something pink is coming.”

Another teaser for Elle read: “Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on @primevideo. I’M SO EXCITED!”
