Ryan Gosling has revealed that one of his daughters convinced him to wear glasses for his character in Project Hail Mary, after telling him he looked “smarter” in them.
Speaking in a USA Today interview, Gosling said: “When I was playing with the character, just trying stuff out, and I threw on some glasses, my daughter went: ‘You look smarter with glasses,’”
He added: “And I was like: ‘Well, thank you very much. I think I will be wearing these in the film. Thank you for that note,’”
Gosling also said his children have been closely involved in the film’s journey to the screen. He described his daughters as “the harshest critics, but they are always right, for the most part, and they’ve really been so helpful.” Gosling said they have “seen many cuts, and they’ve given many notes”.
Project Hail Mary is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The sci-fi film sees Gosling play a middle school science teacher who joins forces with an extra-terrestrial on a space adventure to prevent the sun from burning out. Gosling is also a producer on the movie.

‘Core memory’ family cinema
Gosling suggested the project was partly driven by a desire to make something he could share with his children. “always want to find films that we can bring our kids to and have that core memory moment, but they’re hard to find. I felt like, OK, well, we might just have to make it,” he said.
Gosling and Eva Mendes have been together since 2011 and have two children, Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, nine.

The couple are known for keeping their family life private, even as Gosling’s internet fame has only grown in recent years, including the moment Scott Evans kissed Ryan Gosling during the Oscars Barbie performance.
In 2017, Gosling thanked Mendes during his Golden Globes acceptance speech for La La Land, saying: “If she hadn’t have taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you.”
The film has reportedly earned 94% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
