Chilli, a member of ultra-successful ’90s girl group TLC, has said she is “not MAGA” following backlash over political donations and a social media re-post to her account promoting a false conspiracy theory that Michelle Obama registered to vote as a man in 1994.
The singer, whose real name is Rozonda Thomas, faced criticism after reports from Meidas Touch and The Independent revealed she donated around $1,000 to Trump-affiliated fundraising groups during the 2024 election cycle and re-shared a debunked claim about Obama on 12 March, which she deleted 24 hours later, according to Eurweb.
Chilli responds
In a 29 March public response she shared to her social media, Chilli said both the repost and the donations were mistakes, claiming she was unaware of the content she shared and believed her contributions were supporting causes like anti-human trafficking efforts and veterans.
She also stated she has “the utmost respect” for Michelle Obama and would never intentionally post anything harmful, stating the offensive re-post was an accident.
However, follow-up reporting from Meidas Touch on Tuesday (31 March) pointed to a broader pattern of engagement with right-wing figures and content on social media, including previously following and interacting with accounts linked to pro-Trump politics, although as of 2 April it appears she has unfollowed many of the accounts.
The controversy comes as TLC prepares for a major US tour later this year alongside Salt-N-Pepa, and En Vogue.
