The Football Association has fined Cardiff City £15,000 after the club’s fans directed homophobic chants at Chelsea during an EFL Cup quarter-final in December 2025.

The chanting occurred in the second minute of Chelsea’s 3-1 victory at Cardiff City Stadium on 16 December.

The chant has been defined as a “homophobic slur” and was made a prosecutable offence by the Crown Prosecution Service in January 2022.

Cardiff City have acknowledged the incident but are appealing the fine, which the club describes as “excessive”.

The team say they acted immediately on the night, removing individuals from the ground and displaying messaging on the big screen, and will present evidence of those measures as part of their appeal.

Alongside the fine, the FA has issued Cardiff with an action plan running until the end of the 2026-27 season, focused on developing existing initiatives around awareness and accountability.

In a statement, via the BBC, the club said: “Cardiff City Football Club has a zero-tolerance policy to all forms of discrimination and will continue to work with the police and governing bodies to eradicate the scourge from our game and society.”
