Matilda’s Mara Wilson says fake CSAM images left her feeling ‘ashamed’

Mara Wilson has opened up about the lasting impact of discovering fabricated CSAM images of herself online as a child, warning that such abuse is easier than ever to create and spread with AI.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, the former child star recalled being just 12 years old when she searched her name online and found forum posts falsely claiming explicit images of her existed.

“I could not stop crying,” she said, describing the experience as devastating and deeply shame-inducing.

Wilson explained that while the images were not real, they were often based on photos of her as a young child, which greatly amplified the harm.

The experience, she said, had a profound effect on her life and may have contributed to her decision to step away from acting.

“I felt ashamed… I kind of tried to hide,” she said, reflecting on the emotional toll it took on her.

Now, she’s sounding the alarm about how AI tools are accelerating this kind of abuse. With increasingly accessible technology capable of generating explicit content, Wilson warned that what happened to her is no longer limited to public figures.

“With AI, what happened to me can happen to any child or any woman. It can happen to anybody,” she said.
