Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender fans declare Zuko ‘bi icon’ as trailer released
Prince Zuko (Paramount)
A single exchange in the first trailer for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has LGBTQ+ fans convinced that one of animation’s most beloved characters has been confirmed as bisexual.
In the trailer, released on 7 July, Team Avatar discovers a mysterious Airbender trapped in ice. After Toph remarks that the newcomer is “pretty attractive”, Sokka asks: “What does attractive even mean?”
Toph, who is known for her incredible Earthbending skills despite being blind, replies: “Just give me a straight confirmation.” Instead, Zuko chimes in with: “He’s very attractive… What? He is. It’s all in the bone structure.”
The moment has quickly gone viral, with many fans interpreting it as a playful confirmation that Zuko is attracted to men.
For years, Zuko has been affectionately claimed as bisexual within the Avatar fandom, with fans pointing to his chemistry with multiple characters across the series.

While the new trailer stops short of explicitly labelling the Fire Lord’s sexuality, many viewers are celebrating what they see as a rare example of casual queer representation in a major animated franchise.
The moment is also significant because of Zuko’s status as one of the franchise’s most popular characters. Viewers have long praised the series for its nuanced storytelling, with many saying this new exchange fits naturally within that legacy by normalising bisexuality without making it the story’s focus.
Whether the scene ultimately confirms Zuko’s bisexuality or remains playful dialogue remains to be seen, but for many LGBTQ+ fans, it’s already become one of the trailer’s standout moments.
One said on X: “They put the gay little Zuko clip in the trailer for me.” Another wrote: “I love how Zuko’s role in this movie is literally flash us and be bisexual.” A third said: “I, for one, welcome back our bisexual icon Fire Lord Zuko with open arms and gratitude.”
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premieres globally on Paramount+ on Saturday, 25 July.
