BBC Radio host Nicky Campbell apologises after using homophobic slur

BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell reportedly apologised to co-workers after using a homophobic slur during a private work meeting while retelling a story.
The 65-year-old broadcaster is said to have used the slur “p***ter” in a recent meeting with around six editors and producers connected to his show, according to the Daily Mail. It’s reported that Campbell repeated the word while describing an incident in which someone else had used it.
A source described mixed reactions in the room, saying: “At the time, about half the people were saying, ‘What the f***’, but others were laughing about it.” They added: “But there’s been a growing backlash since then. There are people who could be really offended by the comment.”
What is alleged to have happened
According to reports, Campbell used the word “p***ter” while telling an anecdote, repeating what someone in the story had said.
As per Metro, as the meeting ended, a BBC editor apologised to other staff members for any offence caused, and that Campbell later apologised to colleagues in a face-to-face follow-up.
It’s unknown whether Campbell will face any further action from the BBC.

Campbell’s broadcasting career
Campbell is a Scottish broadcaster known for a long BBC career across radio and television. In recent years, he has been best known as co-host of ITV’s Long Lost Family alongside Davina McCall, and he previously fronted BBC consumer and current affairs programmes including Watchdog and Panorama.
He joined BBC Radio 5 Live in 1997 after a stint at Radio 1, and co-presented 5 Live’s Breakfast show for nearly 20 years before leaving in 2021. He now hosts the phone-in programme Your Call from 9am to 11am on weekdays.
Campbell previously called out a homophobic guest during a 5 Live radio show, who claimed that homosexuality was a choice.
