Elon Musk threatens to make ‘historically accurate’ version of The Odyssey with Grok

Elon Musk is taking his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey to new heights, claiming his AI platform ‘Grok Imagine’ will create a full-length adaptation of Homer’s epic by the end of 2026.
In a 22 July post pinned to his X profile that featured a 3-minute clip of Homer’s Odyssey generated on Grok Imagine, Musk claimed the film would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer”, despite the ancient poem featuring gods, monsters, and mythical beings.
Musk has repeatedly objected to Nolan’s creative choices in his The Odyssey blockbuster, amplifying racist and transphobic criticism of casting actors Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page.
Musk claimed Nolan brought Nyong’o on board because “he wants the awards” in a 13 May post to his X profile, also calling Page’s casting “one of the dumbest and twisted things I’ve ever heard” in a 11 May post.
Musk has also suggested he would be “down” to bankroll a live-action version directed by Mel Gibson after an X user wrote: “I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek”.
Christopher Nolan’s criticism of AI
Nolan has been an outspoken critic of generative AI in filmmaking, arguing that younger audiences are quick to recognise and reject “AI slop” in a 19 July interview with The Telegraph.
Nolan also mused that cinema is moving back toward more practical forms of storytelling rather than fully AI-generated productions, saying: “After years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we’re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.”
