Donald Trump says ‘transgender will never end’ as he makes election plea

Donald Trump is urging voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot” in the 2026 midterm elections and, while discussing what he says is at stake, he appeared to say that “transgender” will “end.”
Speaking Sunday (30 August) to former Rep. Trey Gowdy, who is now a Fox News host, Trump argued that Republicans perform better when his name is directly on the ballot and warned that voters should expect “crazy things” if Democrats gain ground in Congress.
“The men in women’s sports will never end. None of this stuff… transgender will never end,” Trump said, before praising his administration’s record and predicting that Republicans would win.
Gowdy did not ask Trump to clarify what he meant by “transgender” ending.
The remark comes after Trump has made attacking transgender people a major part of his second administration. Since returning to office, he has ordered federal agencies to recognise only two sexes, moved to remove transgender people from the military, sought to restrict trans students’ participation in school sports, and used federal agencies to pressure institutions over transgender healthcare and other LGBTQ+ protections.
Trump made similar comments before taking office in December 2024, when he promised that his administration would “stop the transgender lunacy” and make it the official policy of the US government that there are only two genders.
It remains unclear what Trump specifically meant by saying “transgender” will “end”, but transgender people themselves are obviously not going anywhere. Trans people have existed throughout history and across cultures, and there is no evidence that political repression or efforts to force people to suppress their identities can eliminate being transgender.
For Trump, however, the issue is clearly still part of his pitch to Republican voters. His message to them is essentially that the fight over transgender people’s rights should be treated as a reason to turn out for the GOP in November.
And with the midterms approaching, Trump appears to be making an agenda around trans people and trans issues a huge part of the case for keeping Republicans in power.
