Elliot Page says he got no offers after The Odyssey: ‘I was seen different before’

Elliot Page has surprisingly revealed he’s had no acting offers after The Odyssey, despite glowing reviews of his performance, implying he believes it may be because he is trans.

Page played the Greek mythological character Sinon in Christopher Nolan’s movie adaptation. His casting received backlash from right-wing pundits, which Nolan branded “irrelevant”.

The movie, which also starred the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway, was released in July and made a whopping $1.555billion at box office.

Despite the film, and his personal success, though, Page says he has had no offers for more acting roles.

Speaking on the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast, Page said he was open to calls when McCarthy assumed he was getting “a zillion” offers.

Page, who came out as transgender in 2020, joked: “I know I get some pushback for being… Canadian. I don’t know what it’s about, but…”

He went on: “I’d really love to do, ideally, good work.”

The actor went on to speak about his experience working on films before coming out, saying he “had such a great time” being in Nolan’s Inception, but “was also personally really uncomfortable”.

‘I was seen in a certain way before, and it is different now’

He went on: “A part like Juno, I was able to feel a bit more comfortable and embodied, or something like that.

“But I feel now because that’s removed and I don’t have to deal with that when I’m acting in my performances, I feel like I could do some of my best work now. I’m not having to literally work through a performance than I don’t even quite know I’m doing to get to a performance.”

He said being on a Nolan set now felt “cathartic”, adding: “When I wrapped on The Odyssey, I had a moment, like there was a full circle moment. That’s what lets you weirdly let go more, knowing yourself more and embodying yourself more.”

Speaking of his lack of offers, he said: “I wish I could be more that person who’s like, I just walked in the room. I’m more like, if they want me, if they think I’m right.

“But maybe too, because I was seen in a certain way before, and it is different now. So I understand maybe there is something to reaching out to people and trying to create connections and projects that way.

“I think it’s a little tricky for me to get cast right now. I think that’s probably for pretty obvious reasons.”

Again, Page joked: “The Canadian thing.”

He finished: “But I’m grateful to Chris for having me be a part of this. I’ve been so lucky in my career and gotten to play some really fantastic parts and be a part of some wonderful projects.”
