Drag Race España casts franchise’s first full-time drag king for season 6

Marcus Massalami has been announced for Drag Race España season six, becoming the Drag Race franchise’s first full-time drag king competitor.
The performer was unveiled in the Drag Race España cast announcement post ahead of the new season’s return on 27 September.
GCN wrote: “With the cast announcement for the sixth season of Drag Race España , Marcus Massalami has become the first full-time drag king to compete in the Drag Race franchise.”
A Drag Race first for drag kings
Drag has long been a broad church, but the franchise has historically centred drag queens on screen. Marcus’s casting puts drag king artistry on one of the format’s biggest stages, and is likely to spark fresh conversation about who gets to be seen as “Drag Race” drag.
GCN also reports Marcus is only the second drag king to compete anywhere in the wider Drag Race universe, after Johnny Jones on Canada’s Drag Race season six. Johnny Jones, also known as Velma Jones, performed as both a king and a queen, which GCN says makes Marcus the first contestant whose drag identity is exclusively as a king.
Season 6 cast details and return date
GCN describes Marcus as “a lesbian and a deaf performer who wears hearing aids, bringing further representation to a competition that continues to expand its understanding of who can take the stage.”
The outlet adds that Marcus is the second cisgender woman to compete on Drag Race España, following Clover Bish in season three, and the sixth cisgender woman to appear across the wider Drag Race universe.
Drag Race España returns for season six on 27 September.
