JD Vance gives odd definition of socialism: ‘You want boys in girls’ sports’

Vice President JD Vance

JD Vance doesn’t seem to have a grasp of socialism, as he claims it’s about wanting “boys to play in girls’ sports.”

At a press conference on Thursday (8 October), the 42-year-old Vice President to Donald Trump was asked a simple question. However, his rambling answer descended into the completely unrelated topic of trans people in sports.

“Oh man… It’s honestly a hard term to define these days,” Vance said, as captured by C-SPAN.

“Classically, you would think socialism is about prioritising workers. And yet, in reality, I guarantee that most of the self-described socialists running across the United States of America are going to howl about this announcement today, which is prioritising American workers over foreign workers.

“So, I don’t know what the term means anymore.”

Vance then offered examples of what he sees socialism as in today’s America.

He continued: “I think in reality what it actually means in the American context is, that you want to replace American workers with foreign workers, and you want boys to play in girls’ sports.

“That’s what unites the socialists that I see running across the United States of America today.”

Merriam-Webster defines socialism as “any of the various egalitarian economic and political theories or movements advocating collective or government ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.”

The public also seemed to be confused about Vance’s answer. “WTF does ‘boys in girls sports’ have to do with socialism?” one user wrote in the comments on the video.

This isn’t the first time that Vance has skewed a talking point to take aim at the so-called issue of trans people and minors. He is part of the Trump administration, which has repeatedly made moves to restrict access to trans healthcare and spread an anti-trans ideology.

Recently, Vance called for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate hospitals over so-called transgender care fraud. They have alleged that hospitals incorrectly billed insurers for transgender health care procedures to make a profit.

Elsewhere, Vance has backed controversial WNBA player Sophie Cunningham. The 29-year-old Indiana Fever guard has repeatedly said she intends to “protect women’s sports.”

Vance encouraged “courageous” Cunningham to continue being vocal about her beliefs, despite the criticism.

He said: “We cannot take our country back; we cannot save the United States of America unless you have people of courage who are speaking their mind. I would tell Sophie, ‘Keep going.’”
