Prime Minister Andy Burnham is joining Celebrity Gogglebox. Yes, really
Andy Burnham will be on Celebrity Gogglebox (Channel 4)
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to appear on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox for Stand Up To Cancer from 10 Downing Street – the first time a UK PM has joined the show.
A teaser clip, shared on Instagram, shows Burnham offering crisps and beer to Steve Rotheram, the Mayor of Liverpool, ahead of their segment.
Gogglebox captioned the clip: “Out of hours in No10. Join Andy and his friend Steve on Gogglebox for SU2CUK.”
‘Lovely bit of PR’
Viewers have been left divided by the announcement. One said: “Lovely bit of PR. But perhaps focus on sorting out things such as extortionate fuel prices instead of p****** around on Gogglebox. Has somebody reminded him as prime minister he actually has to do some work?”
Someone else replied: “You think the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom should’ve declined a cancer charity event? Jesus, never go into PR mate. He works, quite a lot, but just like you can chill and drink prosecco, he can chill and raise some money. How much money did you raise drinking that prosecco?”
Another told them: “You poor man, is your job 24 hours shifts, seven days a week? The country is in a state, but even politicians can clock out mate, surely you can give him a brownie point for raising money whilst he sits and watches hours of TV?”
Others said they “loved” it and couldn’t wait to watch – especially given its link to a charitable cause.
Another said: “Because he’s got time for hours of TV whilst the country’s in the state it is! At least he’s made buses cheap.”
Who else is on Celebrity Gogglebox?
Other celebrities already announced for the episode include Joe Lycett, who will appear with his aunties Pauline and Margaret, and the Sugababes – Siobhán Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan, with more names expected to be revealed.
Jeremy Corbyn has previously appeared on the show, as has Boris Johnson’s dad Stanley Johnson.
The most recent series, which ran between June and July, also starred Olivia Attwood, Amy Dowden and Carlos Gu, Jake Shears and Josh Homme, Gladiators‘ Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Matt Morsia, George Clark and Max Belegde, Julian Clary and Nigel Havers, and other returning faces.
Celebrity Gogglebox airs Friday at 9.05pm on Channel 4.
