Two Canadian inmates have become the first lesbian couple to get married while in prison.

The Edmonton Sun reports that the pair, whose names have not been released by prison officials, exchanged vows over the weekend.

As reported by PinkNews.co.uk, a lesbian couple in Belgium went through a civil ceremony last week while both still incarcerated.

However, as Canada is one of only a handful of countries that allows same-sex marriage, the couple currently held in the Edmonton Institution for Women are thought to be the first lesbians to get married while in jail in the world.

In November last year, two male inmates got married in Ontario.

Both of the happy couple are due for release towards the end of this year.

One is serving three years for breaking and entering, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault while her wife is doing six years for manslaughter.

The women spent their wedding night in separate cells.

Not everyone was wishing the couple well. Kevin Grabowsky, of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said “It’s the value and ethics of getting married in jail while they’re serving time together in the same institution.

“It’s not Club Fed, where you go and meet your spouse,” he told the Edmonton Sun
