LGBT History Month’s reminder on teen suicide
The organisers of next year’s LGBT History Month have written to local councils urging them to celebrate the festival.
Co-chair Sue Sanders reminded local authorities that homophobic and transphobic bullying still leads to suicide.
She also cited new research that shows the prejudices can be particularly rife in rural areas.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Trans History Month, held every February, is now in its fourth year.
The History Month seeks to reclaim the position of LGBT people in the curriculum and in wider society.
“We are working for a cultural change which will prevent prejudice and bullying, rather than deal with it after the event,” Ms Sanders said.
“We believe that the debate on Community Cohesion should be widened and be more inclusive. LGBT History Month provides an excellent vehicle for this to happen.”
LGBT History Month has featured exhibitions and displays, film shows, history tours in Soho, Camden, Hampstead, Nottingham and Stockport, poetry and story workshops, talks about local histories, places and people and LGBT quizzes.
