Thousands sign up for Liverpool Pride campaign
A Facebook group created to support calls for Liverpool to have its own Pride event has attracted thousands of members.
Liverpool does not have a Pride festival, despite being the sixth most populous metropolitan area in England.
The city’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Network met on Wednesday 27th August and agreed to set up a Pride Working Group.
“The move towards Liverpool’s own official Pride festival is gathering pace, with the creation of Liverpool Pride Facebook group,” said the Lesbian and Gay Foundation.
“The Facebook group, which to date boasts 1837 members, is dedicated to showing the local authorities, that Liverpool has the numbers and support to stage a successful LGBT Pride in the city.
“The push for Liverpool Pride follows the continued commitment to LGBT initiatives in the area: including discussions to develop the gay quarter in the city, Homotopia, and the Outsiders Film Festival, all of which prove that Liverpool is a vibrant and diverse city, deserving of its own Pride festival.”
In July the bid for a new traffic scheme to enhance Liverpool’s Gay Quarter went to consultation after a decade of persuading the council.
Investors plan to enhance the quarter by using raised bollards to close off Stanley Street, Cumberland Street and Eberle Street from six in the evening.
The city’s LGBT community is still coming to terms with the murder of a gay teenager in July.
Two men from the Huyton area of Merseyside will go on trial next year for the murder of 18-year-old Michael Causer was attacked on Friday 25th July and suffered serious head injuries.
Despite surgery to try to reduce swelling on his brain, he died on Saturday 2nd August.
