Singer Elton John is to give a keynote speech at the Biotechnology Industry Organisation’s annual conference, focusing on HIV/AIDS.

The star will highlight how biotechnology has influenced prevention and treatment of the disease and discuss the outlook for challenges and solutions that lie ahead.

Sir Elton is a keen supporter of the fight against HIV/AIDs, establishing the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, followed the next year by a UK branch.

The charities provide support for people affected by the disease, funding for innovative HIV prevention programmes and aim to eradicate stigma surrounding the issue.

BIO president and chief executive James C Greenwood said: “For many years, we have been deeply impressed by Sir Elton John’s long-standing commitment to the fight against AIDS and his efforts to raise money for HIV/AIDS charitable organisations since the mid-1980s.

“We share a common vision when it comes to solving some of the world’s most challenging health problems, like HIV/AIDS. We are honored to have Sir Elton address our International Convention, which is anticipated to draw some 20,000 people from around the globe.”

He is due to speak at noon on Tuesday, May 19th, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
