Two arrested over death of gay Indian professor
Two journalists have been arrested in connection with the death of a gay Indian professor who was filmed having sex with a man.
Srinivas Ramchander Siras, professor of modern languages at Aligarh Muslim University, was found dead earlier this month at his home. A cause of death has not yet been established.
He was suspended from his job after a television crew entered his home and filmed him having sex with a rickshaw puller.
The 62-year-old was reinstated after a high court revoked the university’s decision but was found dead at his home days later.
Police announced the arrests today and local media reported the pair’s names as Adil Murtaza and Shiraz.
They were arrested on charges of blackmail, criminal intimidation, breach of privacy and trespassing private property with criminal intention.
Gay rights campaigners have accused the university of driving Siras to his death. It is unclear whether he committed suicide.
He had accused some university officials of being involved in the sting.
