A north London man has been jailed for two years for attacking a gay Labour councillor with a hammer after sex.

Marian Calin, 29, of Tottenham, was approached by Labour councillor Neil Wilson last January at Wanstead Flats.

Mr Wilson, a council member for Newham, invited Calin back to his home for sex.

Afterwards, the councillor asked him to leave but Calin picked up a hammer than was lying on the floor and struck him on the back of the head, causing a wound which needed five stitches.

According to the Newham Recorder, the councillor admitted he had initially lied to police about the circumstances of the attack by saying that Calin had knocked on his door.

He later told police officers how the pair had met and blamed his first account on a “combination of fear and embarrassment”, as well as his head injury.

Calin, who claimed the councillor had attacked him during sex, was cleared of wounding with intent and was instead convicted of unlawful wounding.
