International Olympic Committee adds anti-discrimination clause to host city contract

  • TwitterFacebookRedditEmail

Following an international controversy surrounding the Sochi Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added an anti-discrimination clause to its host city contract.

The Winter Olympics in Sochi earlier this year was subject to an international outcry, after Russia passed a law last June banning the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” to minors.

Now, IOC spokesman Mark Adams announced that the language in the new clause is based on Principle 6 of the Olympic Charter, which states that discrimination is “incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.”

Human rights groups are also urging the IOC to alter Principle 6 to specifically ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
