The LDS church has hit out at a Salt Lake City gay bar for throwing a Mormon-themed party.

Club Jam, a gay club in Salt Lake City down the road from the headquarters of the Mormon church, came under fire for hosting a ‘Missionary Position Conference Weekend Party’ during the annual Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints conference.

According to KUTV, bar staff wore missionary nametags, while special Mormon-themed drinks called ‘sacrament shots’, ‘baptism by fireball’, ‘garment droppers’ and ‘151 missionary’ were put on the menu.

A naked statue of the Mormon prophet Moroni was also erected on top of the bar.

Club manager Megan Risbon said: “”We get a lot of out-of-towners, people just started showing up in their suits, wearing their former missionary name-badges and we decided to capitalize on it.

“We’re not having people in garments dancing on the bar, we’re not doing stuff like that, we’re just having a good time. That’s what we do, we throw a good party”

However, the Church’s spokesperson Dale Jones said in a statement: “In recent years many people in our community, including religious leaders and representatives of the LGBT community have worked hard to create greater understanding and develop more sensitivity and good will toward each other.

“It is sad to see events like this – deliberately designed to offend and alienate – given any kind of attention.”
