Katie Hopkins slammed for tweet that #FindMike campaigner should have jumped off bridge

Controversial columnist Katie Hopkins has been criticised for suggesting #FindMike campaigner Jonny Benjamin should have jumped off Waterloo bridge.

Jonathan Benjamin started the FindMike campaign, which aims to raise awareness of suicide and provide a message of hope to anyone who may be struggling.

After a viral campaign, he was eventually reunited with the man who saved his life, Neil, back in January. Neil had stopped him from jumping to his death from Waterloo Bridge in London some years earlier.

Then 20, Benjamin said at the time he had hit “rock bottom” after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and sought to end his life. He has since become an activist speaking out on mental health issues.

‘The Stranger on the Bridge’, featured on Channel 4 yesterday evening, focussed on Benjamin’s search for the man who saved him from suicide in 2008.

Hopkins, who has a Sun column, and is no stranger to controversy, tweeted saying: “ENOUGH with the ads for #strangeronthebridge Starting to wish the sympathetic stranger had let him jump.”

The comment caused a storm of controversy with Twitter users. One person wrote: “What a vile women #KatieHopkins is!!! Her comments re: #strangeronthebridge are awful. She has no understanding of mental health issues.”

Another said: “The guy that saved him has good morals. Once again I ask you, do you have any morals whatsoever? Let see them sometime. Prove it.”

Rapper Professor Green also waded into the controversy, saying: “A new low. @KTHopkins.”

A teenager earlier today asked a very honest question to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg about Hopkins.

Harvey Cuffe asked the Deputy Prime Minister whether he could “kill Katie Hopkins”.

The 14-year-old schoolboy was even praised by Mr Clegg himself who said it was a “brilliant question”.

Hopkins, writing in her column for the Sun, recently said she was unmoved by the plight of hundreds of migrants injured and killed while crossing the Mediterranean attempting to reach Europe.

The organisers of the ‘British LGBT Awards’ recently denied that they invited Katie Hopkins to the event, despite the fact that she received a VIP invitation.

Hopkins earlier this year submitted a question to a panel of politicians at the PinkNews Debate to weigh in on their position on gay parenting, and on the recent boycott of Dolce and Gabbana.
