A model who was born to a lesbian and a gay man via IVF has spoken about her unique family set-up.

Victoria’s Secret model Josephine Skriver spoke up about her identity to i-D magazine, recounting how her mother – who is a lesbian – placed an advert looking for a gay man to start a family with.

She said: ” When people look at me… I hope they see a person, I hope they see a human being just like anyone else.

“You get so many ‘she’s not made of the natural world, she shouldn’t even be here’ – but I’m not a science experiment, I’m not synthetic.

“I’m a real human being. I’m just as real as you are. [But] my upbringing was a little bit different from anyone else.”

She explained of her mother: “It’s not as easy to be pregnant and have a child [when you’re gay]. From the moment she was a child… she knew she wanted to be a mum.

“In the newsletter for the LGBTQ community, my mum put an ad in there and said ‘I want to bring a kid into the world’.”

She got a reply from a gay man – and they went through IVF to start a family.

Ms Skriver explained that she felt lucky to grow up with two sets of loving parents when her mum and dad married their separate partners.

She said: I grew up with a mum and a dad… and a bonus set of parents. I knew who was what, but had more people in my life than you normally would.

“I was such a proud kid growing up… it wasn’t until I started travelling as a model I realised how non-accepting the rest of the world is.”
