The Republican Governor of Nebraska is to attend his sister’s same-sex wedding – despite himself fighting against equality.

Pete Ricketts, who became the state’s Governor in January, is a strong opponent of LGBT rights and opponent of same-sex marriage.

The politician is also the owner of baseball team the Chicago Cubs – and previously said he did not agree with his team’s decision to support the city’s Pride parade.

However, despite opposing Pride and same-sex marriage for everybody else, incredibly the Governor still plans to attend his sister’s lesbian wedding today.

Laura Ricketts, who is an LGBT rights activist in Chicago, will tie the knot with Twitter brand strategist Brooke Skinner.

Governor Ricketts previously claimed: “My sister is gay. I love her, but I disagree with her on this issue.”

The Republican is not the only anti-gay politician to have a close gay sibling.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage, has sustained a number of attacks from his sister Christine Forster – who is a lesbian and wants to marry her partner.

She said recently: “I’d like something more from the current prime minister… who happens to be my brother.

“I absolutely will be lobbying my brother, and I hope the party room makes enough noise about this.”
