It’s harder to like My Little Pony than to be gay, soldier claims
It’s harder to like My Little Pony in the US Army than to be gay, a drill sergeant has claimed.
A soldier in the US army made the claim on Channel 4 documentary World of Weird.
The documentary series profiles BronyCon, the conference for adult fans of the ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’ cartoon series.
Despite being aimed at young girls, the Hasbro show has a well-documented following among fans of all ages and sexualities.
According to the Mirror, the soldier claimed: “I would say a Brony just because at least in the US military, homosexuals can serve openly in the military now and there are protective laws against discriminating against homosexuals.
“You’re not going to get kicked out of the army for making fun of a Brony.”
The US military has only allowed openly gay soldiers to serve since 2013, when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed.
However, an out gay defence official was last week nominated by President Obama as the Army secretary.
Fanning has served previously as the head of the civilian side of the military service, as the acting Air Force secretary.
If his appointment as Army secretary is confirmed by the Senate, Fanning would become the first out gay official to serve in the role.
People who like My Little Pony have never explicitly been banned from Army service.
