CONGRATS! Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black announce engagement
Olympic diver Tom Daley has announced his engagement to his boyfriend Dustin Lance Black.
The 21-year-old has been in a relationship with the Oscar-winning screenwriter since December 2013.
In the Times newspaper on Thursday, the couple announced their engagement.
The announcement in the births, marriages and deaths section, read: “The engagement is announced between Tom, son of Robert and Debra Daley of Plymouth, and Lance, son of Jeff Bisch of Philadelphia and Anne Bisch of Lake Providence.”
Daley came out in a YouTube video in 2013, saying he was still attracted to women.
He later said he identified as gay, and later revealed he had been dating Black.
“I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about,” Daley said. “Now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships.
“Come spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. And that someone is a guy.”
He continued: “In an ideal world I wouldn’t be doing this video, because it shouldn’t matter.
“But recently I was misquoted in an interview and it made me feel really angry and frustrated – emotions that I’ve never felt before when reading something about myself.”
“It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married.”
The screenwriter, 41, campaigns regularly on LGBT issues, and won an Oscar for the screenplay for ‘Milk’, about the late Harvey Milk, one of America’s first out gay politicians.
Originally from a Mormon family, Black was praised for bringing up LGBT issues in his acceptance speech for the Academy Award.
He said: “When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk.
“And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life. It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married.
“I want to thank my mum, who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to.”
