With the action into the second half at Newcastle, Owens told Scottish full-back Hogg off for diving during the clash leaving him in doubts as to his decision.

Owens told the Glasgow man: “Dive like that again, you can come back here in two weeks and play, not today.”

The scathing put down was also a reference to football – the normal sport played at St James’ Park and infamous for player’s “dramatic” diving skills.

In March, a Welsh rugby fan apologised for a homophobic tweet sent to out referee Mr Owens in a face-to-face meeting.

Edryd James sent the tweet which used a homophobic slur following the Six Nations England V France game.

He reported the tweet to the police, who arranged the meeting as part of an Adult Community Resolution.

Mr Owens was also the subject of homophobic abuse at Twickenham last November – the offenders were swiftly banned and fined – which saw him take some time out of the profession.

He has previously spoken out to encourage rugby fans to condemn homophobic abuse.

He is widely praised for his firm but fair refereeing of important games in the sport, and is a highly respected figure in the rugby community.
