Sam Smith explains ‘being the first gay man to win an Oscar’ to Ellen DeGeneres

Sam Smith has finally explained his embarrassing Oscars acceptance speech.

The multi-platinum selling artist awkwardly claimed he was the first gay man to win an Oscar in his Academy Awards speech.

Of course, Sam was far from the first – Stephen Sondheim, Sir Elton John and Dustin Lance Black had all won oscars before.

At the time he told millions of viewers: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar.

“If this is the case — even if it isn’t the case — I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

Now Sam has blamed the blunder on a hip flask filled with tequila.

He told Ellen DeGeneres: “I wasn’t happy with my performance, and we thought we had no chance of winning at all.

“So I was just like, ‘Let’s just get the party started,’” he told Ellen.

“Then we won, and I was just like, ‘Whoa.’”

Admitting that he “obviously” knew he wasn’t the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, Sam confessed: “My brain and my mouth didn’t work together. I mucked up.”

Sam also revealed to Ellen he had been unlucky in love throughout writing his new album.

The singer joked he had kissed “hundreds and hundreds” of boys in his time away, before adding: “No, not that many, but I did kiss a few men.

“Ran around the streets of London and had a good time and I kind of got back to normal life last year.”

Asked about his romance with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn, Sam gushed: “No I’m not [single], which is crazy!

“It’s weird bringing out an album and not being single. When I brought out In The Lonely Hour I was so lonely.

“But now I’m singing songs about this other guy, but I’m quite happy.”

Sam and Brandon looked relaxed and content as they were photographed strolling through New York City together.

In one photograph, the two guys can be seen kissing while Sam has his arm around the 13 Reasons Why actor.

Speaking just a few weeks ago Sam told Beats 1 of his new music: “I’m still very, very single.

“I think I’m even more single than I was when I released In the Lonely Hour, so I’m insanely single.”

23-year-old Brandon, who plays Justin Foley, came out as gay over summer in an emotional post to Instagram.

The Australian actor said he was inspired to show solidarity for his community after seeing a ‘vote no’ message in the sky, “looming over Sydney.”

He responded: “Thank you for raising money and hiring a plane to write your lack of support amongst the clouds.

“I hope your hate and lack of understanding fades, just like those words will.”

His post was passionate, showing his anger towards the No campaign.

“Too many of my friends have been kicked out of their homes, kept in the closet, beat up, killed, ridiculed by church and state, institutionalised…” he wrote.

“And you are scared that if we vote YES, you won’t be able to show your hate for Us.”

He continued: “We’ve been scared s***less our whole lives thanks to all the stigmas that surround Us, stigmas that were set in place by the same kind of people who flew that plane over Sydney.”

“We’ve fought, we’ve come out bravely even in our fear, and you wrote a message in the sky because you’re scared.”
