Hunter Biden claims ‘closeted gay mafia’ of Republicans is ‘biggest problem in US’

Hunter Biden has claimed that a “closeted gay mafia” of largely Republican politicians is the “biggest problem” facing the United States.

The son of former president Joe Biden made the remarks on the podcast I’ve Had It with Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan, on 18 July.

Biden claimed the country’s central problem was not “the oligarchy” but what he called “the closetocracy”.

“Everybody knows there is this closeted gay mafia, largely Republican, that exists in Washington, D.C., and everybody knows every single one of them who’s gay,” he said.

He did not name any individuals.

Biden argued that the claim’s relevance was in what he saw as the psychological toll of living in the closet. “I believe that internal conflict creates so much vitriol inside a person that they take it out on the rest of the world, and they do,” he said.

“Their whole lives they’ve been closeted and so you have this… blackened heart by the fact that you can’t be who you want to be, so you take it out on everybody else.”

The comments quickly went viral, with the coined term “closetocracy” trending online.

Some said the remarks were a swipe at Republican hypocrisy, given the party’s record of opposing LGBTQ+ rights.

Others were more critical, pointing out that the argument risks leaning on the stereotype of the self-hating “closet case”.
