Actor Alex Diaz confirms he’s bisexual in emotional Instagram post after being outed online

Filipino-Scottish actor Alex Diaz has confirmed he is bisexual in an emotional Instagram post after being outed online.

The Instagram post – a picture of a street with a moody sky and the caption, “What will people say? This sentence has killed more dreams than anything else in the world” – followed a controversy that saw Diaz accused of trying to elicit an “indecent proposal” from a fitness coach.

Online fitness coach Miguel Chanco posted screenshots of an exchange between him and Diaz, in which Diaz asked for an “indecent proposal”. In a now-deleted Facebook post, Chanco posted about the interaction, which he said was of a “sexual nature”.

Diaz’s supporters and the LGBT+ community in the Philippines then accused Chanco of outing Diaz.

“Never again will I be shackled by the fear of what might be said about who I am for fear of losing my career and instead, I will seek help, heal, and champion change, acceptance, and representation for the bisexual community and/or anyone who is met with prejudice in our society,” Diaz wrote in his Instagram caption.

“I ask forgiveness from my management, the brands, supporters, friends, my family and everyone else I let down by what I did and/or who I am,” he added.

“I’m sorry, I was wrong in my actions and failed to uphold the values I so strongly try to convey online. It was not my intention to hurt anyone or elude the truth of who I am for all these years but rather a showbiz decisions based on the state of our nation in regards to acceptance and representation of who I am.”

The Philippines is commonly referred to as one of the most LGBT+ friendly countries in Asia, although it is yet to legalise same-sex marriage.

In September 2019, the Philippines’ highest court rejected a landmark case to legalise same-sex marriage, despite admitting that the constitution does not restrict marriage on the basis of sex.

Alex Diaz said he will release a full statement “when the time is right”.
