Adele tearfully postpones entire Las Vegas residency 24 hours before opening night

Adele has tearfully announced that she is postponing her Las Vegas residency, just 24 hours before the opening show.

She was set to perform Weekends With Adele at The Colosseum at Caeser’s Palace from 21 January, and to do two shows each weekend until 16 April, to promote her new album 30.

But on Thursday (20 January), in a tearful video posted to her Instagram, Adele told fans: “I’m so sorry, but my show ain’t ready.”

She continued: “We’ve tried absolutely everything we can to put it together in time and for it to be good enough for you, but we’ve been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and COVID.

“Half my team have COVID and it’s been impossible to finish the show. I can’t give you what I have right now and I’m gutted.”

Adele said she had been “awake for 30 hours” trying to fix the situation in Las Vegas, but had “run out of time”.

The singer added: “I’m sorry, it’s last minute. I’m so upset and I’m really embarrassed and I’m so sorry to everyone that’s travelled again… “We’re going to reschedule all the dates, we’re on it right now. And I’m going to finish my show.

“I want to to get it to where it’s supposed to be [but] we’ve been up against so much and it just ain’t ready. I’m really sorry.”

While most Adele fans were supportive, some expressed frustration that the decision was announced at the last minute.

One Twitter user wrote: “It’s my birthday and I am on an airplane right now using the last of my vacation time for a whole year to see you, along with some non-refundable deposits and a week of babysitting.

“I guess we will miss your new dates. I’m sad you couldn’t decide this until the last minute.”

Ticket-holder Gillian Rowland-Kain told the BBC that she was also already on a plane when she heard the news.

She said: “I was furious that Adele waited so last minute to make this call.

“I recognise it’s not a call any artist wants to make but she would’ve known yesterday that the show wouldn’t be ready by tomorrow.

“Her lack of notice is astounding. I’m angry and frustrated.”

Josh Chavis and his wife spent almost £1,300 on their hotel and flights to see Adele. He said that his wife was working to secure refunds, but that making the announcement a few days sooner “would have made all the difference”.

“We recognise that things are hard for everyone, but this is a huge misstep on the part of both the performer and those responsible for putting the show together,” he said.

Some celebrities reached out to Adele to comfort her, with Pink! telling her: “Sweetheart I have been there.

“The pressure is immense and I’m gutted for all of you. It will come together and it will be amazing when it does.”

Adam Lambert said: “Good for you being honest and open about it. I’m sure the show is well worth the extra wait. Sending a big hug.”

Adele even got some advice from Jo Frost, known to most as Supernanny, who told her: “Go get some sleep, have a hot bath and a glass of cold Sancere seriously before I put you on the naughty step.”
