Google celebrates Scooby-Doo’s Velma being a lesbian with adorable Easter egg

Google has joined in with celebrations after Scooby-Doo’s Velma was confirmed to be a lesbian.
If you type “Velma” or “Velma Dinkley” into the Google search bar, a delightful array of confetti will fall from the top, alongside lesbian Pride flags and rainbow Pride flags.
Google’s Velma Easter egg comes after the new Scooby-Doo animation, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, saw Velma being her true lesbian self and crushing hard on Coco Diablo, another female character in the film.
The film could be summed up as “Velma has gay panic” – highlights include her being struck speechless when she first meets Coco, having an adorable chat with Daphne about how much she likes Coco, and having an existential crisis when Coco touches her shoulder.

Of course, lesbians were thrilled to see the character and the community being celebrated by Google this and took to Twitter to share how excited they were.
One person wrote: “Me and my adolescent, queer self from the 80s are very happy right now”, while another added: “To the Google employee who did the Velma Google search animation: I love you and I hope you get promoted or whatever you want.”

After the news broke about Velma, lesbian singer and actor Hayley Kiyoko, who once played the character in two long-forgotten about Scooby-Doo films, also shared her delight.
She said: “It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later…… love you all so much.”
Velma being depicted as a lesbian has taken a long time and has been a hard-fought battle.
As far back as 2002, director James Gunn had his attempts to make her queer cut from his live-action movies, which Linda Cardellini as the brainy sleuth, with Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne.
