Woman of the moment Doechii has called out “disgusting” political attacks against the transgender community in the US as she accepted the Outstanding Music Artist accolade at the GLAAD Media Awards.

Bisexual “Anxiety” rapper Doechii beat off competition from the likes of Billie Eilish, Elton John and Orville Peck to win the accolade at last night’s 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.

The award was handed to Doechii by fellow queer rap icon Lil Nas X, who won the gong both in 2020 and 2022, and bisexual country-pop singer Maren Morris.

Arriving on stage, Doechii took a moment to thank GLAAD for the support, as the organisation – which monitors LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance in media – turns 40 in 2025.

“This organisation was founded on the principles of acceptance, inclusiveness and empowerment and those are the same things that I strongly believe in and advocate for and that continue to propel me forward,” she shared.

“Especially now that hard won cultural change and rights for transgender people and the LGBTQ+ community have been threatened, and I’m disgusted. Disgusted.”

Though the “Alter Ego” rapper didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, she was likely referring to the president and his administration, which has signed a slew of executive orders aimed at curtailing rights for trans people since his inauguration in January.

Among his attempted attacks on the community, he has tried to prevent trans people from serving in the US military, promised to strip funding from healthcare providers who offer gender-affirming healthcare to trans youth, and strived to prevent trans women from partaking in sports competitions in female categories.

Continuing her impassioned speech, Doechii said: “I want to say that we are here and we are not going anywhere.

“The support and love that I’m feeling as I accept this award from GLAAD is truly overwhelming and uplifting and, as I move forward in my life and career, enabling. It’s also a beacon to other aspiring artists to not let anyone block your dreams.”

In addition to bagging the Outstanding Music Artist award, Doechii won her first Grammy Award back in February, in the Best Rap Album category.

Previous winners of GLAAD’s Outstanding Music Artist accolade include Lady Gaga, Scissor Sisters, Troye Sivan and Sam Smith. Last year’s winner was lesbian “Snow Angel” singer, Reneé Rapp.

At the 2025 ceremomony, other big winners included Agatha All Along, Baby Reindeer, RuPaul’s Drag Race and Will Ferrell’s trans Netflix documentary, Will & Harper.

In one of the ceremony’s most notable moments, Broadway legend Patti LuPone took to the stage to pay tribute to queer trailblazers, before reeling off a fusillade of iconic Drag Race quotes.
