American singer-songwriter Clairo has a seven-word response to those who wish to put a “label” on her sexuality.

The “Juna” singer – who has recently toured the US and Europe as part of her Charm Tour – came out in 2018 as bisexual. Seven years on, and the indie pop star – born Claire Cottrill – has explained that traditional labels don’t resonate with her identity.

Cotrill told Seventeen Magazine, “I don’t care for labels at all.” The 26-year-old – who is rumoured to be the object of Billie Eilish’s desires in her steamy sapphic track “Lunch” – shared her beliefs that “people should like who they want and no one should have a problem with it”.

“I’ve had a better experience with my queerness once I just shut the f**k up and let it happen to me,” the “Bags” singer shared. “If I date a girl, I date a girl. If I date a guy, I date a guy.”

However, Cotrill does understand why others in the LGBTQ+ community might resonate more with “drawing a hard line for themselves—having a clear path is also important. It varies person to person”.

“Being queer is a huge part of who I am. I felt so free once I understood that I love anybody and everybody. I’ll kiss anyone.”

The star also revealed that she once underwent the queer right of passage in the form of the age-old “‘Am I gay?’ test”.

“The coming-of-age part of it is questioning. I wish I could go back and tell myself I don’t need a definite answer,” she revealed. “I can still be curious, date, and kiss who I want. I don’t have to wake up and decide who I am by a certain day. That was the first time in my life that I had to be okay with not having an answer.

“It’s really beautiful. It feels good to be queer,” Cotrill concluded.
