Sarah Michelle Gellar has teased fans with some tantalising details about the upcoming reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong, seen most recently in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, will play the newest scourge of the blood-suckers.
Gellar, who confirmed rumours about the reboot earlier this year, told Vanity Fair at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, in Sardinia, this week: “For so many years, I said no to a possible return. I didn’t want to reintroduce something we had already seen, I waited for the right time to come.”
In February, Cruel Intentions and Wolf Pack star Gellar revealed that it had been Oscar-winning director – and BtVS fan – Chloé Zhao who convinced her to revisit the hit series.
“The gestation was long. It’s been three years and we’re still working on it,” said Gellar, who has recently been seen in Dexter: Original Sin.

The reboot would be “lighter than the last few seasons of the original”, she went on to say. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who died but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”
The producers wanted to “modernise the themes of the series… especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media”.
Originally created by Joss Whedon, the show aired for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, blending horror, comedy, romance, melodrama and even a musical episode. It became a pop-culture juggernaut thanks in part to its queer-coded moments.
Whedon, who was also responsible for the spin-off series Angel, is reportedly not part of the reboot’s creative team following reports that he fostered a toxic work environment on set – claims that he has consistently denied.
