It looks like fans of queer pop megastar Chappell Roan could soon be in for a treat, as the “Pink Pony Club” singer has been spotted filming a new music video.
In footage and photos shared online, the Grammy Award winner can be seen standing on a top floor apartment balcony in New York, donning a bra and skirt combo seemingly made out of hair.
One video sees her attached to a huge, trailing wig – in fiery red, to match her own hair – which hangs from the balcony to the ground. It’s Rapunzul, if Rapunzal were a sapphic songstress and dom top.
Other footage sees Roan in an oversized grey suit, being dragged along the road by a classic NYC yellow taxi, which is attached to her great mane.
In the clips, the 27-year-old is seen lip-syncing an as-yet unconfirmed song, though fans firmly believe that the soon-to-be released track in question is unreleased fan favourite, “The Subway”.
Chappell Roan played “The Subway” throughout her The Midwest Princess Tour last year, and fans have been begging for an official version ever since.
According to some fans who saw Roan filming, “The Subway” was playing while the music video was being filmed.
Though unconfirmed, it would make sense. “The Subway” features lyrics inspired by New York, including, of course, about the city’s subway system, and an opening lyric comparing a former lover to the Statue of Liberty.
It would be Roan’s first new single since her country-tinged queer bop “The Giver”, which was released back in March.
Much like “The Giver”, “The Subway” is another lesbian anthem, but this time about heartbreak rather than, ahem, knowing how to treat a woman in the bedroom.
“‘Til I can break routine during foreplay, and trust myself that I won’t say your name,” she sings on the melancholic post-chorus.
“Yeah, I’m still counting down all of the days ‘til you’re just another girl on the subway.”
The song rounds off with a long outro, in which Roan croons: “She’s got, she’s got a way… she got, she got away.”
When will Chappell Roan release “The Subway”?
While there is no confirmed release date for Chappell Roan’s song “The Subway”, fans believe that there’s a clue in some of the footage Roan was recently filming.
The licence plate of the taxi which was pictured dragging Roan along reads: “8X22”.
Fans believe this could be a hint that “The Subway” is due for release on 22 August.
22 August is also a Friday, the day of the week on which artists typically release new music.

However, Roan revealed back in April that she had been struggling to record a studio version of the song.
“I’ve been banging my head against the wall with ‘The Subway,’ because… some songs just work live — certain things work live — and they don’t work in the studio,” she told Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers on iHeart Radio’s Las Culturistas podcast.
“For ‘The Subway’, it’s just going to feel different, and different doesn’t always mean worse…You just have to really take yourself out of it and be like, ‘This is different and that’s okay.’”
