RuPaul’s Drag Race star shares ‘bittersweet’ move out of United States

Xunami Muse shares 'bittersweet' move from the United States (World of Wonder)

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Xunami Muse has shared that she has moved back to her home country of Panama, after discussing her experience as a DACA immigrant on season 16.

Xunami Muse, drag daughter of franchise juggernaut Kandy Muse and IDGAF icon of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16, has confirmed that she has “officially moved out” of the United States, repatriating to her home country of Panama.

Xunami placed ninth on the 2024 season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but won over the hearts of viewers with her charm and personality.

Shared today, Kandy wrote that Xunami has now moved out of the States – scaring fans in the process by adding “please respect my privacy.”

“My best friend & drag daughter has officially moved out of the United States and has relocated to her beautiful home in Panama- while I will miss you so much, I cannot wait till [yo]u finally discover the world,” Kandy wrote on X (16 July).

Xunami confirmed the news by replying to the post: “Why she ain’t tag me… but also me:” and a picture of All Stars 3‘s BenDeLaCreme uttering the famous phrase: “I’m going home.”

Though neither queen expanded on Xunami’s move, the star was most known on her season for opening up (alongside Geneva Karr) about living in the USA with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

DACA is a U.S. immigration policy that provides temporary relief from deportation and work permits to certain young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, and was established in 2012 by the Obama administration – though then-President Donal Trump aimed to scrap it in 2020, on his first term in office.

On the show, Xunami said: “We literally would not be able to be here if it wasn’t for DACA,” while in the Werk Room. “Thank you Obama!”

Xunami explained that the program allowed her to “be another member of [American] society,” adding: “DACA is why I’m able to legally work and be on Drag Race.

She added that neither she nor Geneva “had the full rights of a citizen”. Geneva also mentioned the precarious feeling of living in the States on DACA.

A fan replied to Kandy’s post “DACA queens are self-deporting now. I hate how this country treat immigrants. She deserved better.”

And to that fan, Kandy replied: “It’s the harsh reality of living in the United States.”

Kandy confirmed that Xunami will still tour with the House of Aja (alongside All Stars 10‘s Aja and season 12’s Dahlia Sin), which kicks off 6 August in Glasgow.

DACA families now face even more uncertain futures under Trump’s second presidency. The Republican president’s crackdown on immigrants (enforced through ICE) has ramped up even in recent weeks.

The federal agency was the focus of protests across the US in June, after masked agents stepped up the frequency of raids and arrests.

A record 2,200 people were arrested on 4 June, according to NBC, an increase from 660 per day during the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency, the BBC reported.

LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers have previously shared their “disgusting” experiences at the hands of ICE agents.
