Former talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed she and wife Portia de Rossi’s 2024 move to the UK was Trump’s re-election – and shared their plans to remarry.

Ellen DeGeneres, best known for her eponymous American chat show The Ellen Show, made headlines in the run-up to the 2024 Presidential Election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, when she and her wife Portia de Rossi left the United States.

Though it was reported at the time that Trump’s possible re-election to office had something to do with the move, it was never confirmed by the pair.

Following her talk show’s cancellation (and allegations of a toxic work place environment) and then her final stand-up comedy special, the pair purchased a house in the Cotswolds.

And as reported by the BBC (20 July), DeGeneres told audience members in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire that life “is just better” in the United Kingdom, while in an audience with broadcaster Richard Bacon.

Speaking to Bacon, who asked “whether the reports that she moved because of Donald Trump were correct,” Ellen replied, “Yes.”

She also explained that she and de Rossi initially planned to use the Cotswolds mansion would be a “part-time house”.

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in’,” she said. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here’.”

Reflecting on her new surroundings, Ellen added: “It’s clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.

“We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

Ellen also spoke about her marriage to Portia de Rossi, and its stability under President Trump. The pair married each other in 2008, in California.

But speaking at the event, DeGeneres opened up about the Trump administration’s attacks on LGBTQ+ people – including gay marriage.

“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” she said, adding that she and Portia have a contingency plan.

“They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”

The Southern Baptist Convention recently endorsed the reversal of a SCOTUS case allowing same-sex marriage.

Trump’s second presidency has been heralded by a landslide of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, including a continued effort to ban transgender athletes from sports, a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ executive orders in the first days of his presidency, the shutdown of an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention hotline and more.

In the United Kingdom, Reform leader Nigel Farage recently branded same-sex marriage “wrong”.
