In news that will warm the hearts of Our Flag Means Death fans, David Jenkins has got a new series.

Jenkins, the mastermind behind the gay pirate series that garnered legions of queer fans over its two season run, is now set to write the pilot for a new HBO Max series, Booster Gold, which will be set within the new DC Universe.

The series was first announced in 2023 by DC Studios co-chairs and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Based on the comic character of the same name, Booster Gold follows Michael Jon ‘Booster’ Carter who after being expelled from college begins to “use basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in the present day,” according to Gunn and Safran, as reported by Deadline.

Jenkins took to Instagram and X.com to share the good news. Alongside an image of Booster Gold Jenkins wrote, “It’s true y’all! I’m writing a pilot about this lovable goofball. Honored to work for James Gunn and very happy to inherit this project from Danny McBride, two of my creative heroes.”

Many Our Flag Means Death fans rushed to the comments to congratulate Jenkins, with one writing: “The vibes are definitely vibing! Can’t wait!” Another added: “I could not have wished for a better person to be writing one of my favourite characters”.

If the series is picked up, it means Jenkins and HBO Max will be working together again after Our Flag Means Death. The popular series was canceled at the beginning of last year much to the dismay of its queer following.

Starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi the show followed the romance between Stede “Gentleman Pirate” Bonnet and Ed “Blackbeard” Teach as they sailed the seas on their ship Revenge. The show was widely praised for its LGBTQ+ inclusion. The second season received mixed reviews after Stede and Blackbeard ditched the high seas and pursued an on-land romance as innkeepers.

At the time of its cancellation, Jenkins said the show had come to a “premature” end in an emotional Instagram post. “We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end,” he said.

A spokesperson for HBO Max told The Hollywood Reporter that the studio was “so proud” of the show. A spokesperson also thanked the fans who “built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”

The outpouring of love for the show was immense following news it had been cancelled. Many fans shared how the show had helped them accept their LGBTQ+ identities. A group of devoted fans collaborated on a Times Square advert demanding the queer pirate TV show return.

The advert by Renew as a Crew ran for two days and featured the website address for a change.org petition. This would go on to attract more than 87,000 signatures.

Sadly two months later it was confirmed that despite talks, the series had failed to find a new home. Jenkins posted on Instagram again to say, “we’ve reached the end of the road.” Jenkins also said the fan campaign had been “noticed across the industry,” and thanked everyone for their support.

Our Flag Means Death is streaming on HBO Max and BBC iPlayer now.
