It’s customary for RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty to be gifted a crown and sceptre to honour their momentous win. But this Drag Race champion has sold her sceptre, and this is why.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under winner Spankie Jackzon has sold her prized possession, the bedazzled sceptre she won in season two.

The New Zealand-based drag performer won the series in 2022, but recently admitted that she felt “ready to part” with the sceptre she was awarded in the series.

“It’s super sad and is special to me, but at the same time, it’s a sign of everything I overcame to achieve it [the sceptre], and now maybe it can become the reason I help other people,” the performer said on Instagram

Spankie sold the sceptre to fund a new community centre called The Jackzon Effect in Palmerston North in the country’s North Island, which is set to be “a sanctuary for performers, creatives, and wild dreams”.

“This isn’t just a prop. It’s a piece of herstory. And now, it’s time for it to help build the next chapter. The Jackzon Effect…This is how I can make this happen.

“It’s not been an easy choice, but I believe in this so much. I still will keep the crown, and that’s enough for me,” wrote the performer.

Starting with a bid of NZD 3,000 (£1,300), Spankie sold the sceptre for the NZD 10,000 goal (£4400), with the funds going towards the renovation and launch of the centre.

“I am beyond grateful to this person for their support and their belief in me. The same goes for all of you,” Spankie wrote in a Monday (28 July) announcement about the sale. “While it’s sad, this is going to do so much more good, and that’s what this is all about.”

Spankie added that her decision to sell the sceptre was not intended to “disrespect” the series. “Drag Race gave me so much, and now I want to turn that [around] and give that back in the same way.”

The star wrote in the announcement: “While it is hard, I sold my Drag Race Down Under sceptre as it’s the only thing I have of value, to fund something bigger than the crown, bigger than some win, something I dreamed about since I was a kid.

“I didn’t dream of winning Drag Race. I dreamed of owning a theatre, making shows, bringing joy, and entertaining the world.”
